The Misconception About Gamers

Everyone Who Is A Gamer Isn't The Same

Many of those familiar with the term "gamer" usually think of many things such as obese, Doritos, Mountain Dew, Energy drinks, living with parents... this seems to be the general opinion on how someone who games typically looks.

I am here to tell you that it is not true for all "gamers". For example, I am a gamer and I am not obese. I have a few extra pounds and I do love me some Doritos but I don't fit the general consensus at all when you look at me.

I also have several "gamer" friends who are guys and girls and they don't fit the profile either. One of them happens to be a successful Graphics Designer.

World of Warcraft is one of those games that has helped foster the idea that gamers are severly overweight, neck-bearded, keyboard-warriors that live in their mom's basement. When in fact, WoW alone has a very diverse gaming community from country to gender to age. I have met players as young as 16 and as old as 62 years. I have met players from China and Brazil, and there are likely just as many female players as there are male; contrary to current "popular" opinion.

So if you enjoy MMORPGs like I do, next time you're playing remember that not all gamers are fat with neck-beards and living in mom's basement.
